Something amazing happened to me this afternoon - well, I think it's amazing and I hope you will too. I've been dabbling in family history since I was in my teens, but one brick wall I've come up against time after time has been one of my grandmothers. Imagine that! I've got one branch of my family tree all the way back to 1500, yet I couldn't find Dorothy's (my grandmother's) birth certificate!
Long story short. I'd always been led to believe that Dorothy's parents, William and Alice, were either her adoptive parents or her father and stepmother. But this afternoon, completely by chance, I stumbled across the information that it was Alice, not William, who married twice and Dorothy was the daughter of her Alice and her first husband. And having married for the second time, Alice's first married name is never mentioned again in any document.... leading to years of fruitless searching on my part.
So now I have a whole new branch of family to look into - and a great-grandfather I never knew about.
