Manchester. Summer 1940.
While the Battle of Britan is raging in the skies, Sally faces her own private battle with her conscience. She knows that Rod Grant isn't the right man for her, but everyone else - her family, his family, all the neighbours - are convinced they are destined to spend their lives together. But they don't know Rod they way Sally does.
Betty loves her job in the corner shop. The one foolish mistake sees her world turned upside down. She end up working in a salvage depot miles from home, where she finds that her new colleague is someone she's met before - the person who caused her to lose her job...
